Don't get me wrong, I'm okay with people headcanoning their own OC as their main OC to use for that country. I mean, we made our OCs the way they are for a reason, because they're made from a whole bunch of headcanons. So that's all good, I can headcanon my Philippines as the Philippines OC to use for works and stuff, cuz it's my works and my OC.
That doesn't mean I'm not okay with other Philippines OCs. There are a few others I like, of course they're not made from my headcanons, but I'm still okay with it all.
Also I am okay with people saying to someone "Your OC is my headcanon OC for that country", because it's a compliment directed at the creator. Their works, their OCs, coolio if you want to use a someone's OC for w/e. But wow you don't need to announce to the whole word, especially in the faces of other people who have OCs for that country as well.
Now here is what I have a problem with
Let's say you know two people with idk, a Kenya OC each. Let's say you decide you prefer Person A's OC. But what I think is the problem is going to Person B and saying you already have a headcanon Kenya OC. I've seen people say "well ____ is my headcanon oc but yours is nice too"
WHY ARE YOU TELLING A PERSON THAT YOUR HEADCANON OC IS SOMEONE ELSE'S???
I've seen someone say "I'm thinking of making an OC for ______________" and people respond "well I already have a headcanon _______ for that country" and
let me tell you what that translates to!
It translates to this: I already have a headcanon OC for _________ so don't bother with your OC/fleshing them out/etc because I already have a set OC for _________ and no matter how much hard work you put into that OC doesn't matter at all.
I've seen people who wanted to make an OC for a particular country or state or w/e but someone comes in and is all OH MY FRIEND'S OC IS MY HEADCANON THAT PLACE
Do you know how discouraging that is? Yes, you can think of someone else's OC as your favourite, but if other friends have an OC of that place as well, instead of going on about how much better someone else's OC is, shouldn't you be encouraging them too? Each and every OC has something special about them and I see so many good OCs get written off just because people claim they have a headcanon OC and make it seem as though any other versions don't exist?
I feel like that's happened with tons of people, not just myself. I've seen friends feel really down about it even though I think their OCs are wonderful. If you're an actual true friend, you should be more supportive of them and their creativity instead of making them feel like they should scrap their characters or ideas because of someone else.
I've been close to scrapping quite a few of my OCs because of others tbph. But because I realised other people have felt the same way as I do about this topic, that maybe someone just needs to say it.
I mean, I have headcanon OCs, but I love seeing more than one take on that particular country. I have three friends with a Macedonia OC and yes I have a main one, but I love seeing all three OCs so much! My best friend has a Montenegro OC but I'm still drawing other versions! And a bunch of friends of mine have Czech Republic OCs and I'd love to see any one of them. Heck, my Philippines is my headcanon OC but I love seeing other Philippines OCs used for KorPiri/MexPiri.
So I guess what I am trying to say is that the term 'headcanon OC' has been used too much in a way that discourages other people, and that people should be more open-minded towards all of their friends' OCs? Because sometimes it can really hurt when you praise other people's works in a way that implies 'this is better than yours'? Yeah, so be careful with how you word things, guys! I know a lot of people don't have the intention of hurting others with the idea of putting one character on a pedestal above all others, but they end up acting that way anyway.
I know I've done it unintentionally, and I feel kinda bad for it? I want to know more about all of my friends' OCs for the APH fandom! Hell, I love encouraging people to give more love to all their OCs! It's something I want to do even more of!
