Lately I've noticed another upsurge again in OCs that are whitewashed. They're OCs that are representing nations where the majority ain't white, but for some reason the OC is pale anyway.

Let me just smack all guilty parties with this journal of mine:

And you better read through that journal if you don't understand what I'm talking about, you silly spud.

Now let me just emphasize a thing.

now, my point is: I don't care what form of media you are using. I don't care how talented you are as an artist. That doesn't mean you should deliberately whitewash characters that shouldn't be whitewashed just because you are too lazy to toggle your colour picker on your art program or you are too lazy to adjust the colours of your traditional media. Of course it takes practise with traditional media to get the right colours, but that doesn't mean you should make lazy cop outs like that.

After all, if you're going to make lazy excuses when it comes to your own OCs, then sorry, maybe you don't give a flying fuck about your OCs as much as you think you do. Because when it comes to APH OCs, you are representing actual places that also in turn represent real people from these places. So yeah, start giving a fuck about how you portray them in both personality and appearance.

By the way, colouring tans can actually be way easier than colouring pale characters at least for me. At least you can actually see the colour appear on your screen and stuff. Pale skin is tougher imo. 8I And if you go too pale with the colouring, the character could start looking more like a hospital patient. Just saying. In any case, if you actually thought about it, colouring darker skin is the same as colouring lighter skin. It's just about choosing your colour and going with it. Go darker with shading, do your highlights, all that toning stuff, tadah. There's nothing that different about it.

So claiming that you don't know how to colour darker skin when you can colour pale skin is actually a very absurd claim.

And read the above journal if you haven't already, because it tackles the issue in much further depth. Don't make Helpful Hannah think you're a little shit. Don't be lazy like Mister Joe.

SO YEAH TAKE MY ADVICE ON BOARD, DON'T MAKE EXCUSES FOR NOT GIVING YOUR CHARACTERS TANS OR DARK SKIN WHEN THEY REPRESENT PLACES THAT SHOULDN'T BE SO PALE

Ah other people notice it too. It's really annoying to say the very least.  And sometimes they try to defend their whitewashing instead of just fixing it ))

Oh yeah, definitely. Like, there are simple ways to counter most of the excuses people make too. Do they seriously think defending their whitewashing will make the person go "OH NO YOU WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG LET'S KEEP THAT SEYCHELLES LOOKING SUPER PALE WOOHOO" uh no honey, it doesn't happen .__.

you're welcome! But really, be careful with choosing your colours. If you struggle with picking colours, use references! With digital art, you can use colour dropper tools to pick the right colours from other pictures so you have the right colour for colouring the skintone of your character and so on. ^^

Like wtf dude
Seychelles is colonized by white people but shes not white,right?
Its actually based on the majority of people.

Sigh, as I've mentioned in the journal I've in this one, there is a strong sense of internalised racism often caused by the media. It's really sickening, yet I can understand why it happens. It's sad. I don't see why someone would make an OC of a nation that's predominantly dark skinned so white, when they can pick a nation where the people are white - if it's such a big deal for them anyway. 8/

The just randomly pick a country then,HUZZAh!
Already white washed
Another reason that I noticed is that most of them make OC's just to pair them.
You know,because of the country's colonizer and junk

yeeeeeaaaahhh pretty much. I've noticed people do that a lot, which is why OCs have a bad reputation in general. It was the main reason people frowned upon PH OCs especially too - cuz people kept making them purely for shipping and the whole PH/World mindset. Siiiiigh.

Why are people still stubborn and sensitive about this still? There should be diversity when it comes to skin color- nothing to be ashamed or make others be ashamed of ://

and dont u just h8 it when they make them have close relations to countries that dont even make sense

also tip for coloring pale skin: make a new layer below the one youre coloring the skin on, and fill it with a color darker than the skin, like gray! its easier to see lighter colors on dark backgrounds. when youre done, you just hide or delete that layer! uwu

Egh, I hate whitewashing. :X I mean, how hard can it be to make someone's skin tone a little darker? Do they think it's ugly or something? Dark skin is beautiful! :( I do try my best to do right by my OCs when it comes to this particular topic, though.

Personally, I think that there's an element of symbolism to height, and hair, eye, and skin color for nations as well. If you were going by majority, for instance, America would probably be brown-haired, brown-eyed, but he's not. And how many albinos lived in Prussia, anyway? XD Also, I know that the heights for most of the nations are taken from the modern average national height... but those CERTAINLY weren't the average heights a couple hundred years ago (5'9" was freakin HUGE, man). So I do think that sometimes elements other than demographics factor into a character's appearance (i.e. Kami's Panama's green eyes). But for the most part, yeah, no snow-white Kenyas, mm'kay? :T

yeah, I've seen quite a few of those. Also the golden-yellow eyed OCs too, that's not much of a normal colour either. My Asian and Latin OCs all go brown eyes, pfffff.

and tbh the contact lens thing is rather weird for a nation OC I wouldn't buy it

Yeah… Though maybe the golden-yellow eyes represent the gold the nation has? I don't really know though. But some gold accents in brown eyes are pretty too.

I hate when that happens, especially for countries and islands in hot humid not to mention the bright and sunny sky with uv rays that tan people. At least add some tan to your oc if they do represent a sunny country or something crai ;; or do something similar to this beautiful Cambodia oc. :iconask-cambodia: crai something like the stays mentioning the skin color or something of how well the country is at least ;; I will never understand why people are too lazy to just search a color palette for tan skin if they're already too lazy to find it on their on. I mean, your country won't be a good oc unless it resembles the majority of the population or matches the country by having some logic to it. Crai especially with the Greenland Ocs why, they're cool and all but-- ;;

verdammit I need to stop typing on phones and having to check over them crai

Yeeeeaaahhh, really. Like, I see so many whitewashed Philippines OCs and Latin American OCs and so on. I don't understand it either, sigh. It's one of those things where you gotta spread awareness about, but it can never get through to enough people, but it's not worth giving up on either. Heavy sighs all around.

You got that right on the nail. I have a feeling that people want to make theirs seem 'amazing' in other words, adding totally unrelated features to their oc. Ugh and don't forget about curls too. There shouldn't be one unless it actually represents something like an island ;; I have a feeling that this is going to be a problem on da and worldwide for like... Forever... Also, why are people making Ocs of fairy tale worlds such as Andalusia??? The place from Enchanted I find somewhat odd... ( though I can't really say since my oc Val crai ;; ) why must there be so many flaws with hetalian Ocs sometimes crai ; u ;

Yeeeeaaaahhhh, adding ahoges to OCs is waaaay too trendy. Not that I'm innocent from doing so, but I do think of what they represent. For example, Maricela's ahoge at the top of her head is Batanes, which are these set of islands above the rest of the Philippines. And bahaha, oh, all those OCs of fictional places. Wonderland's the most common one, I think. Then there's the Narnias, Amestris or w/e it's called, Oz, etc etc. Hetalia OCs can be great yet frustrating as hell, orz.

Ja, i feel like people try too hard to make their ocs seem like, idk ' part of hetalia itself' or something. I mean, its totally fine if it represents an islan like Maricela's but dont you think having an ahoge only for erm sexual arousing is just wrong, pft idk if i should add val into that or not ,, Ive seen a few Wonderlands before and boy did they creep me out...aaaannnnnd whut, they did Narnia crai and Oz wtf ... i know the pain too well ;; Sometimes, i wish i had all the knowledge of one country and make a perfectly balanced abd supported oc just to keep away from the irregulatories

[ im prone to have made alot of typos since im on my nook so sorry bout that ;;

yeeeeaaahhh uhh here's how to colour a skin tone

step one - pick the right fucking colour if your character is tanned don't pick a light skin colour
step two - colour colour colour awayyy

done

don't know how to pick the right colour? Use reference images! On digital programs you can use the dropper tool thing to copy the colour which you can then draw with, that's what i used to do for my OCs before I worked it out on my own 8I

oh god, yes! this here! especially with Greenland, a lot of people whitewash Greenland for really dumb reasons like the ones I hear are something like:

'oh, Greenland is up in the North so he/she must be as pale as snow!' <you have no idea why this stereotype annoys me>
'Greenland's next to Canada so probably Greenland is Canada's brother/sister!'
'Greenland and Iceland! they must be twins!'
'oh, Greenland is owned by Denmark so probably Greenland is Denmark's little sibling related by blood so they must be the same!'

yeah, way to go for forgetting a whole culture here guys! one that was here before the Europeans even came around and survived for many years in the cold/ice/snow and they still look tan as hell!

oh, and I found a article that explains why Inuits have dark skin too which is really interesting.

ugh, ignorant people these days. Do they even know the naming system? really? I know Greenland has a naming system unlike Iceland and the Icelandic surname changes based on gender, I'm not sure how it works but I know the surname changes. Oh, it's even worse when the Greenland allows people to call them 'Eskimo' which it was drop by that country and Canada for better terms because it was consider very offensive and a slang quite a while ago.

Ah yes the whitewashing (I'm having this as a theme for my presentation by the way)

I understand if people don't shade their tan character's skin in black/white art but for the colored one? Honestly, it reminds me of many Indonesia OCs in Indonesian FF fandom where many of them are described to have white pale skin.

And honestly, I think pale skin colour make it easier for someone to look unhealthy (no offence to anyone with white skin)

Oh my, I hope my journals and stuff can be helpful or w/e

and tbh when Indonesia's Independence Day came around, there was a crazy upsurge in whitewashed Indonesia OC fanarts, which was actually what led me to making another journal about the issue, just to refresh people's minds.

And gosh yeah. I'm naturally pale but I get people thinking I'm sick all the time. LOL today I actually am sick but I've had people think I am when I'm not, cuz pale. 8I

Oh it helps =w=d

Yeah... We were brainwashed since long ago to have white skin... I never really think about my skin color. The only time I'm concerned about it was when I have swimsuit marks. You know, like some parts of your body is darker than others because you wear swimsuit. I was called 'stripes' and similar back then

Also when white people come to Indonesia, they have pink skin or dots, making them look bizzare (no offence!) . I hope you get better soon

I hate that whole brainwash. I mean, I've always been white, but in my world, I was actually more told to get tanned skin. So it was shocking for me to learn that other people had it the other way round and were told to become pale. It threw me off a lot and then eventually I realised it's better just to accept all skin colours and love your own. I think it's sad when people get told to change something that cannot easily be changed. And pfft yeah, swimsuit marks. It happens, whatever. XD;

The neighbour's lawn will always look greener

In Indonesia, pale skinned girls will guarantee to have success in showbiz. In TV, magazine, fashion and whatnots, everyone is pale skin. There was this contest in our local magazine, where readers can participate in modelling class if the pictures they've sent were picked. My classmate were in the top 50 but didn't make it because of her tan skin (and she is pretty!). Talk about unfair. I also remember that my babysitter used to give white powder on my face to make me look whiter (it backfired, it made me looked like flour covered my face). I was told that in Philippines, the girls who do cosmetic / skin whitening commercial have western blood in them.

And you know what's the first thing come into my mind when I heard the word whitewashing? Michael Jackson. If not that, my memory of being 'flour' faced
